You can do quite a bit with half silvered mirror.Placed 45 degrees from the camera lens you can get a multiple exposure effect. For example say the camera is pointed out over a lake.Perpendicular to the camera is a makeshift stage, and actor in a white robe against black,The camera will see a ghostly (see through) image of the actor appearing as if he's walking on the lake.
Now imagine putting the mirror in a box.The box is covered top, bottom and one side.Half silvered mirror (also called a beamsplitter) is still at 45 degrees. In front of the mirror is glass,to the side of the mirror is glass. Now let's say you want to see a space ship in flight and see an actor through the window. The space ship is a miniature with the window blacked out.The actor is put on a set to look like the cockpit. On the actor side everything is matted (blacked out)except the area supposed to be the window(Female matte).See where I'm going here?

OK since no one here is familiar with the Schufftan box (no one here has seen Metropolis??),I'll try this another way.Anyone here ever use a half silvered mirror for special effects?
It's a way to do some really cool effects without digi, chromakey or opticals.
